Our investigation began with light as a material, we wanted to see if we can recreate texture and atmosphere through projecting light onto a smooth plain surface. The aim was to move beyond the point of a two-dimensional texture and to create a three-dimensional and tactile experience of materiality.
Juhani Pallasmaa reiterates the importance of shadows in his book ‘The Eyes of the skin’ by saying: “Deep shadows and darkness are essential, because they dim the sharpness of vision, make depth and distance ambiguous and invite unconscious peripheral vision and tactile fantasy.” (Pallasmaa, 2005: 46).
In the project we manifested the essence of Civitas Dei in the experiential quality of the space created by the light. The light projection creates a moment of divine intervention.
Analysis:
When separating the whole into different elements one can analyze the projection according to the Heideggerian fourfold. The stereotomic presence of the base relating to the earth which supports the complexity of the mortal structure. As mortals, we dwell and inhabit the earth while the sky and divine envelopes the composition
